WAVE HILL

Wave Hill is located 500km south of Katherine in the Victoria River District of the Northern Territory. The station is made up of two leases (Wave Hill and Cattle Creek) and combined covers an area of 3 million acres. The homestead is about 10km off the Buntine Highway and about 30km from the township of Kalkarindji.
Originally settled by Nat Buchannan, a great explorer and drover, then owned by the Vesti Family for 70 years followed by 30 years of ownership by Western Grazing, Wave Hill was purchased in February 2021 by Jumbuck with some external partners.
Well-known as the site of the “Wave Hill Walk-Off” when Vincent Lingiari and the Aboriginals employed on the station downed tools and departed in protest of poor conditions and wages in 1966.
The Wave Hill rangelands are a mixture of rolling basalt black soil and good red breeder country running out into lower carrying spinifex country on the southern end.
At purchase in 2021, there are approximately 35,000 cattle on the property of mostly high-quality Grey Brahman composition.
The stock camp assembles in March and pushes through all the mustering of breeders and trucking of sale cattle and some maintenance and development work as opportunity allows in the middle of the year, before winding up in late November. Mustering is done on horseback aided by R22 helicopters and motorbikes.
Staff are encouraged to attend local rodeo and camp drafting events throughout the dry season and with 20-25 staff on station, it is a busy community on its own.
Wave Hill Station offers an excellent opportunity to work on an iconic station, enhancing your horsemanship skills, considerable stock work and with much development work in front of us, it will be opportunity to learn invaluable skills in that respect too.
